The new front end of the Mk8 Golf seems to have a few detractors on both sides of the pond saying it looks ‘droopy’, ‘sad’, ‘un-VW like’, etc... (some people really don’t like the new headlights).
The only thing I don’t really like is the foglights on the new Alltrack.
Just NOOOO.
Then, I thought, what does it look like up against it’s Skoda and Seat siblings.
I like the minimal yet functional looking lower valance, while the headlights setting lower as they work outwards from the grille, could get a bit of getting used to.
The Skoda Octavia goes for a slightly aggressive yet ‘moustached’ sort of look.
While the Seat Leon goes for sporty more angular chiseled affair.
The side is Golf, understated and fun ctional, won’t look out of place in any car park, etc...
The Skoda goes for the more sweeping lines of that of the Mk3 Superb with the hidden bonnet shut lines flowing down the body to the rear light cluster.
The Seat has more curves and contours with angled accents to emphasi se it’s sporty nature.
The rear, again, understated. Nothing out of place (I’m still not sold on the three dots it the rear light cluster*) .
The rear of the Skoda looks understated also but carries the Skoda characteristic ‘C’ form in the rear light cluster.
The Seat looks elegant with smooth curves and rear lights that track across the tailgate.
*
Like the Skoda Octavia
and Seat Leon.
In all, the Saet looks really good but the Skoda still does it for me, a very slightly smaller Skoda Sup erb. The VW, well, not for me. The looks are too easy to forget, it ble nds in too much with any background and the price, the Golf starts out at Ł23,980 for the ‘Match’ with either 1.5TSi manual or auto or 1.6TDi in manual. The Skoda Octavia starts at Ł21,945 as the ‘SE First Edition’ with 1.0TSi manual, 1.5TSi manual or 2.0TDi manual.
The top Octavia vRS will be available in 241hp 2.0TSi petrol, 197hp 2.0TDi diesel or 241hp petrol hybrid with a 1.4TSi engine with an 85kW electric motor (DSG only).

I don’t mind the looks of the VW, but I have some questions about the functionality of the fog lights.

I’d take the Škoda out of that lineup. Really, I wish we got Škoda in the US.

When does the smaller, 3-door Flog come out?

Looks like yet another Volkswagen to me.

I think they’ll be functional, I’ve seen similar on the Kia Ceed, etc...

As far as I’m aware there won’t be a three door.
But that’s not to say there won’t be.

I don’t mind the MK8 and even kinda like the silly fogs. Maybe I drink too much VW Koolaid or am just wishful we’ll even see one of these estates on American soil.
Those other two are quite good looking vehicles. I’d drive any of them.

It’s a good looking line up for Skoda.

The fog lights are whatever; everyone is doing them now, just like weird DRL LEDs.
The rake of the hood is unacceptable. They made the bonnet area longer than the Mk7 but it’s flatter until the last tenth, so it slopes down hard which is why is looks so “droopy”. It’s just wrong. BMW could do a nice long hood with the F01 / F10; VW should have taken note. The rest of the car looks good.
The Skoda looks like a Kia. That’s not a good thing . The Seat seems like it’s trying too hard.

I think the rake of the Golf’s bonnet was more for pedestrian and occupant crash saf ety and aesthetic design and they did it quite well.
The Octavia just looks like an updated but slightly smaller version of my Sandy the Superb.

I have strong opinions about pedestrian safety standards that begin and end with “I’m American”
Sandy looks great from 90% of its angles . One of the best estates. Really all Skodas looks great. That grille, though....idk if they stole it from Kia or Kia stole it from them, but it’s just disappointing.

I glanced at that earlier.

I actually really like it. A Golf isn't supposed to be flashy. It's supposed to be mature. This one looks brooding like it is plotting how to release it's inner angst against the boss one day. It's also confident looking. It's exactly what most Golf owners want without being anything they don't want. It's a nice design, though yeah the weird dots in the taillight are stupid. Let's hope that the US has a different pattern.

Well didn't know that was a thing. Not all manufacturers need to have a distinct corporate grille opening pattern and it would be nice to see more freedom in that detail in the future.

Gotta say, the Škoda is the most elegant - dare I say, BMW-like. SEAT has the sporty end of the design spectrum to themselves , while the VW definitely takes the understated route. Among the three, they've covered all the bases.

Looks good. I’ll take an electric one, please. :)
![]() 09/10/2020 at 02:52 |

All electric or hybrid?
If all electric, you’d have to go for the VW Golf id.3
If hybrid, you can have the VW e-Golf.
1.4TSi plus electric motor making 242bhp, can be used electric for 37 miles up to speeds of 81mph.

The new Dania Sandero is due to be on sale later this year or early next year.

I’ve always thought SEAT had the best style of the trio, but I’m not feeling that new one. Looks more like an Infiniti, and that is not a good thing IMO.
I just hope the mk8 wagon, or at leart Alltrack make it to the US.

I like the light bar on the Mk8, and the estate’s rear end is a bit nicer than before, but otherwise I think it’s a step back from the 7. It’s not terrible by any means, but the Mk7 was just right in terms of surfacing and detailing, while e verything on the 8 is a bit softer not as well thought through - note how the rear door opening cuts into the wheel arch lip on the 8, while the Mk7's neatly misses it, for example.
Overall, it’s not an ugly car, but the lack of attention to detail makes it look like an older and cheaper car than the Mk7. And apparently the interior quality bears that out, going by the reviews I’ve read so far. The Skoda is the easy choice out of these three.

I would love an id.3 wagon with a large cargo area.
I c urrently have a MK7 Golf hatchback, and I wish I had the storage space of the Golf wagon. And I would prefer all-electric next time.

I’ll be going petrol hybrid next time.
Living on a U.K. terraced street, it’s not always possible to get parked outside the front of my house.
I’ll be sticking with Skoda also,

Very nice.
These days, I am working from home, and I am staying indoors for the pandemic, so I haven’t been driving much. At the moment, the Golf is sitting in the driveway of our s uburban house , covered in dust (and also in ash from the W estern US forest fires). But , if I ever have reason to do a daily commute again, I will probably get something electric.
